Anna University was established on September 4, 1978 as a unitary type university. This university is named after the late Dr.C.N.Annadurai, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. It offers higher education in engineering, technology, architecture and applied sciences adapted to the current and projected needs of society. In addition to promoting research and disseminating the resulting knowledge, it promotes cooperation between the academic and industrial communities. Anna University is a government university located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It is recognized by UGC as a "University with Potential for Excellence" (UPE) and accredited with an "A" grade by the NAAC. According to the NIRF 2022 ranking, Anna University is the 20 best university to study in India. Anna University offers 29 UG, 90 PG and PhD level courses in 8 faculties and over 30 departments on its campus. Besides, it offers more than 100 degree and degree courses in its 593 affiliated universities which have more than Rs 7.2 lakhs of enrolled students.
The University was formed by bringing together and integrating four recognized technical institutions in the city of Madras (now Chennai), namely,
- College of Engineering (CEG) (established in 1794)
- Alagappa College of Technology (ACT) (established 1944)
- Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) (established 1949)
- School of Architecture and Urbanism (SAP) (established in 1957)

Anna University offers distance learning courses through its Distance Learning Center. Anna University is very popular for its B.E/B.Tech, B.Arch, M.Tech and MBA courses. However, the Anna University acceptance rate is around 29% as only applicants with the highest scores in the entrance exams are admitted here. Anna University accepts students based on entrance exams such as TANCET, TNEA, NATA, UGC NET and CSIR NET.
There is a significant increase in Anna University's job placement statistics during the 2022 job placement campaign. The university saw a 53.15% increase in the number of job offers made during the campaign of placement 2022 compared to 2021. The university also recorded an increase of 16.66% in the average package and 18.33% in the number of company visits. The highest salary package offered was INR 36 LPA and the average package was INR 7 LPA. Anna University has also collaborated with more than 35 international universities for student exchange programs to provide better opportunities for their students.
The Anna University campus spans 189 acres of land and is equipped with all modern facilities. Additionally, it has 20 research centers and satellite campuses in Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai and Tirunelveli. The university currently has 1,400 doctoral students and over 1,600 students enrolled in degree programs.
