Delhi University is one of the leading universities in the country with an esteemed heritage and international recognition for its high academic standards, diverse educational programs, distinguished faculty, illustrious alumni, varied extracurricular activities, and modern infrastructure.
Over its many years of existence, the University has upheld the highest global standards and best practices in higher education.
Founded in 1922 as a unitary, teaching, and residential university by an act of the then Central Legislative Assembly, a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and social projection has made the University a role model and a trendsetter for other universities.
Starting with three colleges and 750 students, it has grown into one of the largest universities in India with 16 faculties, over 80 academic departments, the same number of colleges, and over seven lakh students. More than 500 programs offered by the University are approved by the Academic and Executive Boards, of which 209 programs are under review for NAAC accreditation. The rest that operates in universities are separately accredited.
As the University of Delhi expanded in many directions to keep pace with a rapidly growing city, South Campus was established in 1973 to provide easy access for residents of South Delhi. It moved to its current location on Benito Juarez Road near Dhaula Kuan in 1984.
The campus now encompasses 69 acres of green, hilly land and its buildings blend attractively with the natural surroundings. The various departments are located in the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Interdisciplinary and Applied Sciences. The SP Jain Center for Management Studies is also located on the South Delhi campus.
In addition to these, the campus has a good library, health center, bank, post office, DTC pass section, and administrative and examination blocks. South Campus also provides housing for faculty members and non-faculty staff. Outstation students are offered accommodation in three hostels.
